Description
GEB (Biomass Energy Group) is a research group which was created at the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE) with the main objective of conducting research to develop technologies of production and sustainable use of biomass for energy purposes in ecosystems of Northeast Brazil. In the semiarid region, the GEB has been developing for several years research projects to assess the viability of sustainable forest management practices in the area of caatinga and the development of techniques for organic fertilization in short-cycle oil-seeds (cottonseed, groundnut, sesame, sunflower, mammon). Recently, researches were initiated in the Northeast region of Zona da Mata with the production of sugarcane, forage palm and sweet sorghum as sources of biomass for ethanol production. Furthermore, the GEB also carries out research on energy conversion processes of biomass, like pre-treatment and enzymatic hydrolysis of lignocellulosic materials, fermentation of hydrolysates and digestion of residues. They are also important in the group researches with biogeochemical cycling in terrestrial ecosystems, in particular cycling of carbon and nitrogen on different land uses in the Northeast, including also the use of mathematical models to simulate biogeochemical cycling. Researchers and students from GEB work predominantly in the framework of the Postgraduate Programme in Nuclear and Energy Technologies (PROTEN), at the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE), in partnership with various institutions such as the Institute of Agronomic Research (IPA), Department of Chemistry Engineering and Department of Genetics, both from UFPE, Department of Mathematics and Applied Statistics, Federal Rural University of Pernambuco (UFRPE), National Institute for Space Research (INPE), among others.
